Supplementary oxygen for elective Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia: useful in prolonged uterine incision-to-delivery interval?

BACKGROUND The benefit of administering supplementary oxygen during elective Caesarean section under regional anaesthesia is controversial. It has been hypothesized that its use would improve fetal oxygenation in the event of a prolonged uterine incision-to-delivery (U-D) interval. Our aim was to test this hypothesis in a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, controlled study. METHODS We a...

Supplemental oxygen for caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND Routine administration of supplemental oxygen to parturients undergoing Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia has been criticised in recent times. OBJECTIVES To assess the need for routine supplementary oxygen in healthy women undergoing Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia in resource challenged setting and establish the efficacy of administration of oxygen at 4L/min. ...

Caesarean in mare by Marcenac incision under local anaesthesia

A nulliparous non-descript mare was presented with a complaint of dystocia. The mare was recumbent and physical examination revealed that the animal was in shock. There was no straining and foetal forelimbs were visible outside the vulva. The foetus was dead as there was no pedal reflex. Vaginal examination revealed anterior presentation with dorso-sacral position and rigid lateral head deviati...

Comparison of pentastarch and Hartmann's solution for volume preloading in spinal anaesthesia for elective caesarean section.

We studied 160 patients undergoing elective Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia who received a preloading volume of 15 ml kg-1 of 10% pentastarch in 0.9% saline, or Hartmann's solution, in a prospective, randomized, double-blind study. We compared the incidence of spinal-induced hypotension in each group. Hypotension was defined as a decrease in systolic arterial pressure to less than 70...

Incremental spinal anaesthesia for elective Caesarean section in a patient with Eisenmenger's syndrome.

We describe a new approach to anaesthesia for elective Caesarean section in a woman with Eisenmenger's syndrome. Incremental regional anaesthesia was performed using a microspinal catheter and haemodynamic monitoring included transthoracic bioimpedance cardiography. This approach allowed the disadvantages of general anaesthesia and invasive cardiac output monitoring to be avoided.
